Editor: See Water woes in collapsed Komani for more info. The Department of Water and Sanitation has procured the services of a diver in an effort to resolve technical issues restricting water flow at the Waterdown Dam in Queenstown in the Eastern Cape. In a statement, the department said due to the difficulties experienced around Queenstown and surrounding areas, dam levels had now reached 29% of capacity. “The levels dropped below the levels of the valves normally utilised to supply water to the area. As such, the DWS attempted to utilise the valves further below, at about …

Water woes in collapsed Komani

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE There is plenty of water in the Xonxa dam, but due to maladministration, none of it is flowing out of the taps in Komani (formerly Queenstown). The water shortages are the direct result of the continued failure of the Chris Hani District Municipality to deliver on their mandate to deliver bulk water supply to the Enoch Mgijima municipality. As a result, schools have closed, businesses are struggling to keep their doors open and residents battle one another in queues for drinking water. Hospitals and clinics are barely able to function, and germ control is a …

Appeal to DSTV to share Rugby World Cup Springbok games with the public broadcaster

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The DA shares the disappointment of South African rugby fans who cannot afford DSTV and will not be able to watch World Cup rugby games. We understand why the cash-strapped public broadcaster, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) could not afford to purchase the broadcasting rights for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. The SABC is currently facing a financial crisis largely as a result of corruption and financial mismanagement that took place during the Hlaudi Motsoeneng era. The GCEO of the SABC, Madoda Maxakwe yesterday revealed that it would have cost the SABC $28 …

Only 16% of police stations meet the UN police to citizen ratio

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance (DA) can reveal that only 16.1% of police stations have enough officers to meet the UN recommended police to citizen ratio which is 1:220. This information was contained in a reply to a parliamentary question. Even more harrowing is the fact that some local police stations suffer incredibly disproportionate ratios of police officers mandated to protect the people within their jurisdiction. For example, the police to citizen ratio at the Flagstaff police station in the Eastern Cape is 1 police officer per 2236 people or 1:2236, while the Mashashane and …

Will we hear; “Next Stop after Cabo Verde is Nelson Mandela Bay”?

Cabo Verde, Cape Verde Islands

IN a FIRST for The Ocean Race Cabo Verde will host The Ocean Race in first ever West African stop in 2021-22. Editor: If one looks at the map and presumes that the next stop on the around the world race is at the tip of Africa one is really tempted to put one's appendages at stake here and say that the next stop will logically be Nelson Mandela Bay - bypassing Cape Town for the third time in 13 races around the world..... The tension is killing me. Cabo Verde will become just the second African venue the Race has ever visited and the first West African nation to host the event, dubbed …

Chaos trumps law and order

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE Service delivery protests are on the rise in the Eastern Cape and continue to contribute to an environment of chaos and disorder, with almost two protests taking place every day. MEC of Safety and Liaison, Weziwe Tikana, said in response to a parliamentary question, that 674 service delivery protests took place in the province between the 1st of April 2018 – 31st March 2019. This is a staggering increase of 158 additional protests that took place when compared to the 2017/18 financial year, which had 516 service delivery protests.
