The Humewood Golf Club, which has been under the management of Mark Wiltshire Golf since September 2012 received a major boost with the release of the highly reputable Golf Digest Magazine’s 2013 course ranking list.
Humewood, which slipped from 18 to 20 in 2012 has moved a very credible five places up to 15 on the ranking list, which for a club that was in the doldrums before the Humewood Committee called on Mark Wiltshire Golf for management assistance, is nothing short of remarkable.
Competing against courses that are well funded and a lot more modern, Humewood’s outstanding conditioning is surely a major factor in its rise up the rankings. It has though, been a long battle for the Humewood Committee who are working hard at ensuring the long-term viability of this famous club.
When taking over the management of Humewood Golf Club, Mark Wiltshire Golf put a “Seven Point Plan” in place with the focus being the conditioning and playability of the course.
Winning the members over by the provision of top class golf facilities was an important strategy. To ensure they were masters of their own destiny, soon after taking up the management contract, Mark Wiltshire Golf assumed responsibility for the course as well. The results are clearly evident with member rounds on the increase and the club receiving favourable comments from visitors on a regular basis.
Mark Wiltshire, the founder and owner of Mark Wiltshire Golf, paid tribute to the efforts of the greenkeeper, Ivor Peterson, and his team. “Ivor has taken the improvement of the course as his personal project and it is so good to see the course and his efforts being recognized”, said Wiltshire.
Club President, John Black was equally praiseworthy not only for the efforts of the greenkeeper but for those of Mark Wiltshire who Black said, “brought a great deal of golfing common sense to the table.”
Black also stated that the club’s two major sponsors, Chevrolet and Investec and indeed the members, who had shown tremendous loyalty, should also take credit.
“Through their support the club has been able to ensure that its greatest asset, the course, was being maintained in accordance with the high standard expected of a top 20 club,” said Black.
