It is seen as unusual to play cricket during the winter as this is “off season” to most but with the ever increasing demands on professional sportsmen at international level local cricket administrator are forced to find new ways to grow local cricketing talent in order to compete for those top positions via the Chevrolet High Performance Programme. The programme identifies top cricketers from a young age, coach, guides them, and rectifies their skills. As any coach would know, there is just not enough time “in season” to coach, correct and compete. Sport has become far more demanding and ways need to be found to give our cricketers every opportunity to reach their dream.
With the pressures of an ever increasing fast paced lifestyle, demanding school schedule and competing sporting codes, many players at this age level are not exposed to much time cricket at school level. Therefore, as part of the Chevrolet High Performance Programme an off-season u/18 3-day practice match will be played at Old Grey Cricket Club from Tuesday 25th to Thursday 27th June 2013. The objective of this match is to give players the opportunity to test their mental and physical approach, as well as to add to their experience in this format.
Various u/17 and u/18 players from our Chevrolet High Performance Programme, which includes players from Cradock and Graaff-Reinet, have been invited to participate in the match. They will be up against current Eastern Province Academy players such as, Shaakir Abrahams, who has been included to increase the pressure and competition levels. Marizanne Kapp and Dane van Niekerk (EP Academy and SA Women players) will also be putting what they have learnt this year at the EP Academy to the test.
The players that will be participating:
Chad Lookwhy (St Dominics), JJ Bekker (Cradock High), Brydon Carse (Pearson), Junior Mlonyeni (Union High), Marcel Stapelberg (Cradock High), Rohan Knoetze (Grey), Sam Mkumbuzi (Grey), Dean Marais (Union High), Onele Kebe (Dan Qeqe), Juanre Roberts (Framesby), Jonathan Draai (Grey), Ivan Oosthuizen (Despatch), Ntobozuko Nqam (Motherwell), Anru Emjilo (Framesby), Lylle Petersen (Muir), Bernard Ferreira (Grey), Siphesihle Mangongoma (Motherwell), Dylan Blignaut (Grey), Stefan Tait (Framesby), Cianan van Heerden (Grey), Siyamthanda Gqibithole (Zwide), Shaakir Abrahams (EP Academy), Marizanne Kapp (EP Academy), Dane van Niekerk (EP Academy).
