At the local launch of the new 108 and 5008 Peugeot vehicles last night it struck me that I had no idea why all the models new seemed to have an ‘8’ at the end of each designation.
More confusing was the memory of such models as 206, 207 etc.
Was this some dastardly Gallic method to confuse their English cousins into buyng more vehicles? Was this a throwback to the French Revolution? What was the French Fascination with 0 and 00.
I am not really that interested in motor vehicles as an ‘outer show of my inner desire’ OR is that ‘as an outer show of my lack of large protuberance’?
BUT, I am interested in WHY people do things so I had to know “why 8”?
Luckily, a representative from Peugeot was able to assist and the explanation does have a slight twist of French logic to it:
Initially Peugeot appended the last digit of the model year to each model number, hence the 05, 06, 07 , 08 etc.
The 0 denotes size from small – 0 to large – 00
In 2008 a decision was made to no longer add the last digit of the year to each model number and just stick at ‘8’
Good thing they decided that in 2008 and not 2007 as our friend James Bond is not Gaelic.
Anyway – the ONE thing that will get me excited is when Peugeot eventually make their electric vehicle variants available….
We haven’t been given an official date but the new Peugeot 2008 Electric SUV will probably come to South Africa in 2020.
