Victoria Park High School (VP) pupils are hard at work collecting non-perishable food items to fill a grocery trolley for the Coega Door of Hope Children’s Home in Sydenham, North End.
Coega Door of Hope’s Mama Gladys and staff provide a loving home environment to more than 30 kids ranging from new born to 18 years of age. These kids have been given a second chance in life as many of them found themselves in dire circumstances due to either illness or death of a parent, abandonment or extreme poverty.
Victoria Park High prides itself on being a “caring family” and goes out of its way to make children feel at home and also be aware of those less privileged. The school runs a feeding scheme and has more than ten “care” societies which make a difference in the community. The ethos of caring, giving and nurturing is one that the majority of VP learners live by. “The “Coega Door of Hope” project is one of the initiatives that we see as important and we do want to make a difference!” said VP headmaster Mike Vermaak.
Vermaak said that VP secured a stand at the newly introduced Kiddies Expo that forms part of this year’s Homemakers Expo. VP is really proud of its achievements and the amazing opportunities it affords teenagers and wants to showcase this. “We want the public to get a feeling of the awesome spirit that prevails in our school and want to ensure that everyone knows that PE has many fine schools to choose from” Vermaak remarked. The school has also enrolled learners from the Art and Design departments for the specially arranged talks by Annemarie Meintjes and Wouter van der Westhuizen, showing its commitment to expanding the educational experiences of its learners.
Representatives of VP High School will be doing the official handover to Gladys Panda of Coega Door of Hope Children’s Home at the Algoa FM Homemakers Expo on Saturday.
