The Udumo Youth Culture & Environment Festival is an annual festival that will be taking place for the first time this year.
In the months of April & May the PE Opera House selected Dance Facilitators to work with schools based in the Townships and Northern Areas in Traditional & Contemporary Dance. Through eliminations four schools: Phakamisa High School; Hillside High School; Mzontsudundu High School & Imfesane High School will be showcasing their environment themed dance pieces. Theatre practitioners were also selected to facilitate in schools throughout Nelson Mandela Bay (townships and Northern Areas) who will also be participating during the festival. From Tuesday the 11th until Friday 14th of June there will be daily sessions on Environmental talks, we have invited stakeholders and individuals to share their knowledge and experiences on Environment. We are so proud to have Shaziyah Laher who was part of a group of 7 young scientists representing South Africa at the recent Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in Phoenix Arizona in USA. Shaziyah will be showcasing her project on efficient way of producing and disposing of alternatives to plastic that will be less harmful to the environment.
We kick off Udumo Youth Culture & Environment Festival 2019 with a clean up session with the participating schools in two areas Dan Qeqe Stadium at 10:00AM & Red Location Museum from 12:00, we would like to extend an invitation to all members of the community, media fraternity and corporates to join us.
Performances will also come from Masifunde Learner Development who will be showcasing Dramatic Poetry and snippets from So What Now Sarafina which will be staged at the National Arts Festival. Theatremaker Simphiwe Vikilahle who has worked with Qhaphelani High School and went on to win a national competition will also be staging their production during the festival.
The Udumo Youth Culture & Environment Festival takes place from 10 to 15 June 2019 in the Main Theatre, PE Opera House from 12h00 to 16h00 daily
