Truck Driver, pieces together a much-avoided life story in South Africa: amidst the scourge of rampant women abuse, there are men who are good to their women and there are women who are bad to their men. First performed at the National Arts Festival in 2013, Truck Driver will be staged at the PE Opera House this July as part of the current cycle of Drama Seasons.
Truck Driver is written by the cast and Directed by Nomhle Nkonyeni, starring Xolani Ngesi, Anele Penny, Xabiso Zweni, Nobesuthu Rayi and Zukiswa Cakucaku.
Theatre, Television and Film Doyenne Nomhle Nkonyeni needs no introduction having began acting in 1961 in New Brighton along with prolific actors of her generation and beyond Winston Ntshona and John Kani.
During her illustrious career Nomhle has won 6 Vita Awards for various roles in the categories of Best and Supporting Actress including an Eastern Cape Metropolitan Achievers Award for her life’s work. Nomhle is also a recipient of numerous awards such as the Naledi Award – Lifetime Achievement in Theatre and during the 2013 National Arts Festival Nomhle received a Standard Bank Ovation Award when the PE Opera House took six productions to the festival. In 2016 she was awarded a SAFTA Lifetime Achievement Award too.
Showing no signs of stopping, Nomhle has rejoined Mzansi Magic’s popular Igazi for the second season and has recently joined the cast of etv’s Scandal! as Lulama Langa playing Hlomla Dandala’s character’s Mother.
Nomhle holds a Masters Degree in Theatre for Development through King Alfreds College in Winchester, United Kingdom in 2002. Whilst in the UK Nomhle also studied towards a Diploma in Conflict Management from Lewisham College London in 1999.
Having returned from living in Johannesburg for the greater part of her career, Nomhle a great advocate for development and nurturing of young talent continued to mentor and guide young aspiring theatre makers from her New Brighton home.
Nomhle has appeared in Hollywood blockbusters such as ‘Zulu’ alongside Forrest Whitaker, Hilary Swank and Orlando Bloom and ‘Catch A Fire’ to name but a few.
Truck Driver opens at the Barn Theatre PE Opera House on Wednesday 12 July at 19:00
