The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM), in conjunction with Zantsi Showtime Boxing Productions, will be hosting a boxing tournament at Nangoza Jebe Community Hall, New Brighton on Friday 29th March 2019. It starts at 6PM.
The main bout in this Women’s Tournament is featuring our very own, Port Elizabeth born boxer, Nozipho “Intsimbi” Bell who will be challenging the current World Boxing Federation (WBF) Featherweight Champion, Unathi “Showtime” Myekeni of East London.
Speaking at the weigh-in held at Nongoza Jebe hall, on Thursday the 28th March, Deputy Mayor Cllr Thsonono Buyeye said that the tournament will put the city back on the boxing map.
Buyeye mentioned that the city was happy that Mbali Zantsi, the Zantsi Showdown Promotions boss with loads of experience in the promotion of fisticuffs was back in the city.
Furthermore, Cllr Buyeye mentioned that in conjunction with Nelson Mandela Bay Promoters Association, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality brings another boxing tournament at the Indoor Sports Centre in Uitenhage on Sunday 31st March where the South African Welterweight kingpin Mziwoxolo Ndwayana of Makhanda will be defending his title over 12 rounds against East London’s Odwa Gaxa.
“As a city we want to revive boxing here in Nelson Mandela Bay. History will tell us that at some stage we were the leading city in the country when it comes to boxing, but for some reason, the standard dropped in our city. So, part of what we want to do really, is to revive boxing. And that we’ll achieve when we don’t have a tournament once in a while,” the Deputy Mayor said.
