At 09h30, Monday, 25th November, SA Whale Disentanglement Network (SAWDN) volunteers launched from the Port Elizabeth NSRI station aboard two NSRI Port Elizabeth sea rescue craft, JLT Rescuer and Spirit of Surfski 4, following eye-witness reports from the crew of a charter boat of a Humpback whale entangled in fishing rope lines off-shore East of Port Elizabeth's Port in Algoa Bay. On arrival on the scene the charter boat crew were commended for remaining with the whale until SAWDN and NSRI arrived and the charter boat was released to continue on their way. At 08h38, Saturday, 23 November, the SA Whale Disentanglement Network (SAWDN) volunteers were activated following reports of a whale carcass entangled in fishing nets at a Purse Seiner (fishing boat) approximately 7 nautical miles off-shore of the Port of Port Elizabeth. NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew were activated and SAWDN volunteers accompanied three NSRI Port Elizabeth sea rescue craft, Spirit of Toft, JLT Rescuer and Spirit of Surfski 4 and rendezvoused with the Purse Seiner that had the whale carcass in fishing nets. NSRI rescue swimmers in a sea rescue vehicle, EC Government Health EMS, the EMS Aeromed 3 helicopter, Gardmed ambulance service, Relay EMS, Coastal Water Rescue (CWR), Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Beach office and NMB lifeguards and the SA Police Services responded. On Tuesday morning, 10th September, the SA Whale Disentanglement Network (SAWDN) were alerted by the East London ski-boaters of a 4 meter juvenile Humpback whale entangled in fishing rope 2 nautical miles off-shore of east London. A dive charter boat had located the whale and remained with the whale to mark its position pending the arrival of SAWDN. On Monday evening, 12th August, NSRI were alerted to a whale beached at Kabeljous Beach near to Jeffreys Bay. The Marine Animal Stranding Network were alerted and Marine Scientists and Vets were alerted and activated. The 11 meter Humpback whale was found to be in a poor condition and suffering. Marine Animal Stranding Network authorities made the decision to humanely euthanise the whale and on Tuesday morning a police team carried out the humane operation to euthanise the whale under the guidance of marine scientists and vets on the scene.
