Africa’s largest family beach event, the aQuellé Ocean Racing SeriesTM, kicks off at Hobie Beach next Sunday morning with registration taking place at News Cafe next Friday evening between 5.30pm and 8pm. The Series, now entering its 11th season is unique to Nelson Mandela Bay and attracts families from around the Eastern Cape on mostly alternate Sunday mornings for some great family fitness fun. Season XI will comprise of 10 race days concluding on 3rd April 2016.
The aQuellé Ocean Racing Series offers 6 separate events each race morning in which family members can take part. For those who prefer to stay on the beach, the Series has the 5km Beach Run, 5km Beach Walk and a 1km Beach Run/Walk for children under the age of 12 years old. In catering for the swimmers, the Series will feature a 1km, 2km and 3km swim distance every race day.
Events, which start at 9am, all run simultaneously on race mornings making for an great spectacle when viewed from the beach. Prize giving follows on the beach with a seperate kids prize giving around 10am and the adult prize giving thereafter. Always a highlight of race mornings is the abundance of lucky draw prizes donated by local companies with the feature prize each race day being R1,000 cash. Medals are given to all finishers in the Kids 1km beach run whilst in the adults races, overall winners and category age group winners receive medals. Gareth Burley of Kingfisher FM is the MC for the event with entries open from 7.30am at Hobie Beach.
Currently there is a pre-season registration special of just R150 which includes Series membership of R50, an ORS drawstring bag, t-shirt and a cap. Series membership is compulsory for the Series with race day entry fees of just R60 for the swims, R40 for the beach events and R30 for the kids 1km run applying on race days. Family and Premier Membership specials are also available.
