The advent of the Internet and being able to connect to anyone or thing in the world from the palm of your hand has spawned a number of new methods to maximise your return on investment on assets that may stand idle for long periods of time.
This has given rise to the term ‘sharing economy’.
The Sharing Economy is an economic system in which assets or services are shared between private individuals, either free or for a fee, typically by means of the Internet. The sharing economy enable you to easily rent out your car, your apartment, your bike, even your wifi network when you don’t need it.
Airbnb is the largest hotel chain, and they don’t own a single hotel. Uber is the largest taxi company, and they don’t own a single car.
Studies have shown that one of the largest assets, with the fastest depreciation value, that we purchase stands unused for 90% of it’s life – your car.
When it comes to electric vehicles there are three main ways that they can take part in the sharing economy:
- As a shared asset itself – eventually in an autonomous driving mode the vehicle will deliver itself to you when needed
- As a portable battery store to be used by the grid whenever the EV is plugged in and the grid needs to iron out high demand
- Or like ChargePoint – the largest electric car charging firm in the U.S. – which doesn’t own a single charger. Instead, the company sells charging stations to businesses that it then provides with cloud-based tools for managing the stations, allowing owners to, for instance, keep track of usage and set fee levels.
An App closer to AirBnB is PlugShare – PlugShare is a powerful mobile application and online tool that allows electric car owners to locate and optimize the use of EV charging stations. At present PlugShare lists three charge points in Port Elizabeth – at the Nelson Mandela University (University Way, Summerstrand), Baywest Mall (Baywest Boulevard Entrance 2) and Continental Motors BMW (6 Ring Road, Greenacres).
You can help the quiet revolution along by installing an EV Charging station outside your Guest House, Hotel, Coffee Shop, Restaurant, Shopping Centre or in your forecourt. Contact Straton Electrical for EV Charging Station options.
