On Friday 7 December 2012 the traditional Ward 15 Christmas Lunch for the Elderly once again took place in a jubilant and festive atmosphere on the porch of the Red Location Museum. Approximately 1000 citizens graced this honorary occasion.
Mama Majola and her Olden Age Clubbers – who played games with them and taught them some “keep fit” secrets – entertained them first and foremost. Vibrant and the elderly’s favourite jazz music was played in the background.
The Programme Director was Gift Ngqondi, the Branch Chairperson of the Ernest Malgas Branch and Ward Councillor Kolisile Frans delivered a welcoming address, after which the sponsors to the occasion were given a platform to share their input.
Ms Veliswa Gwintsa, the Director for the Metro’s Art, Culture, and Recreational Services blessed everyone with a heart warming input; followed by Gerald Majola, a beloved resident of Ward 15, who had the crowd in stitches with his wit.
Participants from the Red Location Arts and Crafts Project who wore their beautiful handmade crafts were also introduced to the audience.
Councillor Mfunda shared a special word with the guests, speaking on behalf of the Executive Mayor; after which Nomabaso Bedeshe, the current Acting Assistant Director of the Red Location Museum, continued with a brief input.
In between, the Bantu Church of Christ rendered beautiful choral songs.
Gifts were moreover handed out to some elderly people whose names were priorly identified by 6 Unit Leaders and finally Councillor Jimmy Tutu finally delivered the Vote of Thanks.
Our special thanks go out to Mandala Madwara, Mr Kabani and Gerald Majola for their generous contributions – to whom we are deeply grateful for making it possible to cater to a crowd of such a magnitude! 2 Cows were slaughtered and its meat cooked to delicious succulent Xhosa perfection in the giant cast iron black pots.
We also need to thank the Ward volunteers from the Ward who kindly assisted with all round tasks such as ushering, waitressing and cleaning the premises afterwards
The catering Team did an excellent job preparing and dishing delicious meals to the guests.
The event was organised jointly between the Ernest Malgas Branch, the Office of the Ward Councillor and the Red Location Museum.
