The alleged aggressor in a Port Elizabeth road rage incident on Monday had purportedly rushed to the scene after his daughter had been involved in an accident.
Footage of the incident surfaced on Tuesday and showed a man beating another at the roadside while paramedics and other bystanders looked on.
While a man cowers and tries to shield himself by hiding behind a traffic light-pole, his attacker can be heard saying: “I will [farging farg] you up… [you hairy feline].”
Gardmed spokesperson Dave Gardner defended the inaction of the paramedics, who can be seen watching while one man is assaulted.
“The public sometimes are under the impression we are like the police and we have to intervene and this is not the case,” he said.
“My staff had called me from the scene to say things had gotten heated. I told them to call the police and the traffic authorities and to stay out of it. They are not trained to deal with physically detaining people and I will not put my staff at risk.”
Gardner shed light on what had incensed the brawler, to a point where he attacked the other driver.
“His daughter had been in an accident and while we were treating her she called him [the dad] and he came to the scene. He arrived like a bull in a china shop,” Gardner alleged.
“He was then in quite a state because this guy [the apparent victim] refused to get out of the car. When he eventually got him out… well you have seen the video,” Gardner added.
Police spokespeople had not responded to questions at the time of publishing.
