As part of our mandate to promote the culture of reading, writing and learning; Nelson Mandela Bay (NMBM) Library service will officially open the Gqebera Public Library on 05 June 2017. The opening of Gqebera Public Library serves as an extension to the existing 25 Libraries in the metro. The freshly designed building conveniently located in the heart of the Walmer Township, will offer a range of services including lending and research services which will benefit the community.
The Gqebera Public Library will be equipped with books, CDs, DVDs, magazines, newspapers, toys, computer stations among many other resources for public utilization. Shy of being a 21st century masterpiece, the Library will provide creative spaces which support modern Library services while providing a platform which supports ongoing research and development through providing a wealth of resources.
Gqebera Library will complement the services offered by the Walmer Town Library located approximately a kilometer away; which for many years has been the only Library in the area catering for Walmer, Gqebera and surrounding communities.
Community libraries are designed to meet various and evolving information needs of communities from toddlers to adults who require sitting and studying facilities. The presence of the Gqebera Library will ideally prove crucial to the development of its community as well as the Township economy.
The opening of Gqebera Public Library fulfills an ideal prominently emphasized during the March 2017 South African Library week theme “My Library, your Library”. The theme encourages conversations from the community’s perspective on the importance they attach to libraries as opposed to destruction of these essential facilities, conversations which appeal to ownership by communities.
Opening Gqebera Public Library serves as a significant stride of the NMBM Library service in taking Libraries into the heart of communities and striving to awaken a sense of ownership.
The official launch programme will be held on 05 June 2017 at the Gqebera Public Library located along Fountains Road in the Walmer Township.
The event is scheduled to start at 10h00.
