Ashwin Daya, acting Chief Executive Officer of the MBDA says “the agency ran a countrywide search for a candidate that understands the sports and special events environment, commercialization, sponsorship recruitment and Mpho came through very strongly”.
“The stadium already has a competent team overseeing operations, finance and facilities in place. What we really needed, and also highlighted in the stadium commercial plan is an individual than can build solid commercial partnerships and start to turn the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium into a strong income generator, lessoning the financial burden on the municipality and ultimately the rate payer” concluded Daya.
City Manager, Johan Mettler who formed part of the interview panel says “the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality welcomes Mpho with full confidence that the MBDA has found the best available candidate for the big task ahead. The Stadium is the City’s largest asset by value and we are determined to get it to sweat for the City and the people of Nelson Mandela Bay through efficient and skilful management. The MBDA, Mpho and his team can count on the City’s full support”.
This is what Mokonyana had to say:
The task ahead – I have a huge task ahead but a very exciting one. This is an opportunity to provide Nelson Mandela Bay and wider Eastern Cape with a fresh new perspective of the stadium to ensure that the legacy is carried over and that the ship remains stable. I will however welcome support and commitment from the community, city and staff as well as corporates.
Goals – I feel it is essential to increase the stadium’s revenue and ensure that this iconic asset is used to its fullest potential in terms of a bursting and solid events calendar – making the city and stadium the preferred destination for staging major events.
Focus – The short term focus is implementing systems and processes as well as identifying new revenue streams which will generate more income for the stadium.
“Our medium term goal is to create an environment in which the stadium becomes a focal point and desired destination for new exciting and events, consequently resulting in an influx of spectators,” concluded Mokonyana.
