Shock waves echoed through Nelson Mandela Bay today after a horrific head-on collision between a Toyota Conquest and a Metro traffic car claimed the lives of an elderly citizen and a senior traffic officer shortly after 12h00.
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security, Cllr John Best, expressed his sincere condolences to the families of senior traffic officer Joseph Mbaxa (57) and the 93-year-old elderly citizen on behalf of the municipality, its executive and management.
“I was on the scene and we had to console colleagues of our official as paramedics tried to revive him on the scene for at least 30 minutes.
“The elderly gentleman died on impact and both were extracted with jaws of lives as their vehicles were severely smashed on impact.
“Police officers on the scene confirmed that the elderly gentleman was driving from Cotswold onto the N2, did an about turn and drove towards oncoming traffic. Another vehicle travelling in front of Officer Mbaxa managed to swerve out of the way. This literally gave our traffic officer milliseconds to respond.
“The elderly citizen died on impact and emergency staff tried valiantly to save Officer Mbaxa’s life but unfortunately to no avail.
“It is always tragic when we have loss of lives, but it is especially disheartening when someone dies in the service of our people.
“Every officer put his or her live on the line when reporting for duty every day due to exposure to various dangerous elements,” MMC John Best said.
Mr. Joseph Mbaxa joined the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in 2005 as a Law Enforcement Officer and qualified as a traffic officer in July 2008 and served from the beginning of 2013 as a senior traffic officer.
