Dear Sir
I put a motion of exigency to the council meeting of the 31st May 2011 emphasising the need to address the escalating crime situation in Central.
I raised the question of why in its wisdom the Metro had terminated the services provided by a private security company that had enforced and controlled security in Central to an acceptable level. This company was replaced by the so called Metro Safety and Security personnel who contributed little or nothing to the security of the Central PE CBD.
At the meeting I emphasised the fact that the Metro Council are guilty of neglect if they continue to ignore this grave situation and provide no solution. The crimes most prevalent at present revolve around drug sales, armed house-breaking with assault and in one case known to me of a car hijacking where a firearm was held to the owners head!
The Mayor no doubt feels secure as he is escorted by a permanent security guard who incidently even escorted him into the Council meeting on his election as our incoming Executive Mayor! I must remind him that there are many people out there who are totally unsafe and it is his and our, as Councillors, duty to provide safety and security for all our people.
Why the Metro refused to discuss this matter remains a mystery to me and many other Councillors. This does not bode well for the future!
