As this historical SABC news report shows – back in 2016 the excitement was around the re-opening of the Red Location Museum.
Fast forward to 2018 and the Red Location Museum stays closed.
“Why should you, a White South African who served in the SADF care?” I hear you ask.
“Simply because of the following,” I say:
My first couple of visits to the Red Location Museum left me with a sense of unease and persecution as a person associated with apartheid as a result of the colour of my skin, my service in the apartheid army and accidental timing of my birth.
But, then, a sense of empathy and understanding of just what that terrible period in our history meant to my fellow South Africans arose within me and I found myself looking forward to visiting the Red Location Museum again and again. I became an unofficial promoter of the Red Location Museum’s contribution to the healing of our past and it’s contribution to mending fractured relationships and distrust by taking many people through.
And then – we as a city allowed a certain sector of the population to close the museum.
That healing power of the Red Location Museum has been lost to us as a city and nation and it is time to bring it back.

We are broadcasting from the Red Location Museum in New Brighton. We reported earlier that a stand off between the community of Red Location and the Nelson Mandela municipality around a housing issue that lasted three years has been resolved that included this museum has been resolved.
To hear more about the conflict and the resolution were joined by Mkhululi Mbotyi who is the chair of the Red Location Arts Council and is for the re-opening and Ndyebo Mbambani who is a community leader and still feels aggrieved by the process.
