Athol Trollip and a resident in the derelict Lwendlekazi High School in New Brighton which has been home to a group of residents since 2000, after their shacks were burnt in a fire.
The above from a 14 October 2015 letter to the Editor titled: Destitute families take shelter in abandoned and collapsing Lwendlekazi High School
BUT two anomalies appear here – the name of the school appears to actually be Lwandlekazi High School in Avenue A, New Brighton and it was only closed down on 13 February 2015 begging the question how could these families have been there since the year 2000 as reported!
In 2014 only 30% of the matric pupils from Lwandlekazi High School in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, managed to pass matric.
And when Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle visited the struggling school during the start of the new year, he expressed his disappointment that kids at the school arrived late.
On Friday 13 February 2016 the school was closed down after Masualle arrived at the school and said poor performance, a shortage of teachers and insufficient resources was the main reasons for the decline in pupil numbers at the school to 500.
“Owing to this drop in pupil numbers there was also a shortage of teachers, which was unfair to the remaining pupils,” he said.
The Lwandlekazi High School has now been merged with Newell High School.
