South African Junior Elite triathlete Nathan Le Roux, from East London, won Round 2 of the About IT Triathlon Summer Series on Sunday morning. Le Roux had a brilliant race, coming out of the water in third place and then leading the cycle pack through the 20km cycle around the University before pulling ahead in the 5km run to finish in a time of 1hr 4min 53sec. Over 120 triathletes from South Africa took part in the 2nd round of this 3 part Sprint Distance Triathlon Series in hot and windless conditions in Port Elizabeth.
“It was a great day today and I had an awesome race. I really enjoy exciting courses and this was a particularly fun and exciting route.” said Le Roux after the event whilst congratulating South African team mate Dylan Pivo from Stellenbosch who finished in second place about 90 seconds back with Rinaldo Morgia of Cape Town completing the top 3 another 90 seconds back. In the ladies race, defending Series Champion Lize Bright remains unchallenged with another great win in 1hr 14min with professional show jumper Jade Hooke back from the UK on holiday and showing she’s still as fit as ever with a second place finish. Robynne Klee placed 3rd in the ladies category in 1hr 18min.
The father and son pairing of Alec and Jamie Riddle followed on from where they left off at Round 1 with another comfortable win in the teams category in 10th place overall in 1hr 12min. Former national swimmer and surf lifesaver, Kevin Richards, will now join the Riddle team for the swim leg at Round 3 on Thursday at Port St Francis.
The Series also introduced a kids triathlon for those under the age of 15 which saw just under 40 youngsters taking part in near perfect conditions on Saturday evening. Showing they have the competitive spirit of their Springbok legend father Ollie le Roux, 9 year old Chloe won the 9 and under category with 6 year old sister Donna placing 3rd just after Zanri Black. Eldest sibling Mia le Roux was the runner up in the 10 and 11 age group to Bella Archibald with Courtney van Wyngaardt placing 3rd. The boy winners on the evening were Josh Hufkie (9 and under), Ryan Alfonso (10-11yrs) and Dylan Snyman (under 15) whilst Jade Grobbelaar won the girls under 15 category.
The About IT Triathlon Summer Series will conclude with Round 3 on Thursday morning at Port St Francis. Online registration is still possible until 25th and late entries will be taken at the Port from 7am. Racing starts at 8.30am and will finish outside the Sustainable Sea Centre at the Port.
