A Uitenhage Community Fundraising event, Dinner with Prof Jonathan Jansen, will take place on Tuesday 22 March (booking details below).
Professor Jonathan Jansen, the Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Free State (UFS) from 1 July 2009, is known for his strong views on transformation, peaceful reconciliation and unity, which he has pursued in earnest at UFS. Despite setbacks like the notorious Reitz Four video incident, under Jansen’s leadership, this former bastion of conservative Afrikaner learning is fast becoming a model of integration in South Africa.
Prof Jansen is a former high school Biology teacher, who completed his undergraduate education at the University of the Western Cape (B.Sc.). He obtained a doctorate degree in 1991 from Stanford University (USA) with the title: Curriculum reform in Zimbabwe, 1980-1990. He was also a Fulbright Scholar to Stanford University from 2007 to 2008, former Dean of Education at the University of Pretoria (2001-2007) and an Honorary Doctor of Education from the University of Edinburgh.
The UFS – seen as a bastion of support for the former apartheid government – is transforming under the baton of Jansen. Fittingly the UFS motto today is In Veritate Sapientiae Lux (In Truth is the Light of Wisdom). The UFS name is the fifth different name for this institution with roots stretching back to its formation in 1904 as Grey College (1904-1906), then Grey University College (1906-1940s), University College of the Orange Free State (1940s-1950) and University of the Orange Free State / Universiteit van die Oranje Vrystaat (1950-2001) culminating in today’s under of the Free State under the steerage of Professor Jonathan Jansen.
