Gavin Van Rooyen, President of North End Football Association, East London provides this history of the Northern Areas LFA Gakeem Abraham’s/Frank Ownhouse Memorial Inter-LFA Provincial Tournament taking place in Port Elizabeth from 4 to 7 October 2017:
This is the 10th edition of this tournament involving PE Northern Areas, East London Central, King East, Cape Town Northern Suburbs and Cape District, Kimberley Sol Plaaitjies and a local LFA from the host LFA. The clubs u12, u14, u16, u18 and senior squads take part.

The event started in 2008 in PE and was hosted by Northern Areas LFA
In 2009 it was hosted by Cape District LFA
In 2010 it was hosted by Pietermarizburg based PADSA LFA
In 2011 it was hosted by East London Central LFA
In 2012 it was hosted by PE based Northern Areas LFA
In 2013 it was hosted by Northern Suburbs LFA
In 2014 it was hosted by King East LFA
In 2015 it was hosted by Cape District LFA
In 2016 it was hosted by East London Central LFA
The event commenced in 2009. EL Central participated as from 2014. PE Northern Areas have won it a record 7times with only Selborne College winning it once in 2011. Under Evril Adams, Alberto Lun Wing and Malvery Bobbs we have a strong side this year to break the PE stranglehold. We were semifinalist in 2014 and 2016.
The event commenced in 2009. EL Central started participating in 2014. PE Northern Areas won it every year ie 8 times. Our u14 side is undoubtedly the most gifted side we have this year and is a strong bet for honors. They were finalist in 2014 and reached the semifinals in the last two events losing on all three occasions against Northern Areas. Our side have a strong management team comprising of Gerald Johannes, Fabian Botha and Eugene Williams who beat Northern Areas in March this year in PE to win the Vallie Brink Goodwill Games.
U16 (was U15)
The event commenced in 2008 involving North End FA. Michells Plain won it in 2008. Tygerburg won it in 2009, Northern Suburbs won it twice in 2012 and 2015. Cape District won it twice in 2014 and 2016. Northern Areas won it thrice in 2010, 2011 and 2013. We have over the years not performed well at this level despite reaching the semis in 2010 in Maritzburg and 2016 and being plate finalist in 2013. Bradley Klaasen, Zane Mtati and Mzi Booi has been tasked to turn their fortunes around.
U18 (was U17)
The event commenced in 2009 with us as participants. Cape District won it 4 times in 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2016. Northern Suburbs won it twice in 2012 and 2013. Northern Areas won it twice in 2010 and 2015. Despite fielding a very strong side we have flattered to deceive losing out in the semifinals in 2011 and 2016. Donovan Frazer, Darian Hendricks and Mandisi Baliwe is the management team tasked this year to bring the best out of this talented squad.
The event commenced in 2008 with us as participants. Michells Plain won it twice in 2008 and 2009. North End/EL Central won it twice in 2010 and 2016 and were finalist in 2011, 2013 and 2015. Cape District won it twice in 2011 and 2013. King East won it in 2012. Northern Areas won it in 2014 and Tygerburg won it in 2015. EL Central have this year changed their selection strategy by picking a squad of players mixed with experienced and youth that has the desire and passion to play for the EL Central badge. Hilton Poovan, Gerome Kroutz and Brian Fortuin are tasked with the mantle to lead a squad that has tasted glory twice before under the astute management of Charles Pretorius, Shaun Lyons, Joseph Shaw and Darian Hendricks.
EL Central top individual achievements:
In 2015 Aviwe Klaas was voted senior player of the tournament in Cape Town and Lulamile Njahu was voted the top linesman’s of the event.
In 2016 the selected All Star Senior Squad members from EL Central were Reon October, Lindsay Snyman, Olwethu Mfunzeweni, Ettiene Saptoe, Cuan Benny and Ivandre Campbell (capt), Kylo Botha, Juninho Klaasen and George Campbell (coach)
Vuyo Zambodla has been appointed as the General Manager of the East London Central travelling squad and Charles Pretorius and Darian Hendricks shall lead the Technical Committee.
