The dip area of Third Avenue, Newton Park in Port Elizabeth will be closed from 8pm tonight and municipal officials are on high alert following a warning from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) that up to 40mm can be expected overnight.
Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Safety and Security, Cllr John Best, said Disaster Management officials will be on high alert from this afternoon as the expected rainfall could lead to localised flooding especially in lower-lying areas.
“Please note that while the dip area is closed, you may have to leave your homes earlier tomorrow morning as the William Moffett Expressway will take strain due to congestion.
“Motorists must please also take the necessary care when driving in lower-lying areas and on wet road surfaces as careless driving and the adverse weather conditions could lead to accidents.
“We will review the closure of Third Avenue dip tomorrow morning and advise motorists accordingly,” MMC Best said.
