The NMMU Department of Music is excited to announce the first Symphony Concert for 2016 and the start of their 50th Birthday Celebrations. After the success of the inaugural concert of the NMMUSO (NMMU Symphony Orchestra) last year in November, the orchestra is excited to be starting off the birthday celebrations with a bang!
The Free State Youth Orchestra, thanks to the help of The National Lotto Fund and the Free State Symphony Orchestra will be travelling to Port Elizabeth to take part in a Symphony Collaboration hosted by NMMUSO.
On Sunday, 13 March, the Port Elizabeth community will be able to experience and be a part of this special event that will not only promote orchestral music but will also proudly promote the talent of young South African musicians as over 80 musicians will be sharing the stage. “We are hoping that this is the start of many such projects with other young orchestras in the country.” – Grant Snyman.
The orchestras will perform side by side under the baton of well-known South African conductor, Alex Fokkens and NMMU Master’s student, Grant Snyman. The orchestra will lead the audience in a balanced, interesting and proudly South African programme as they will open the concert with “Transkei” by Antoni Schonken.
The first half of the concert the orchestras will present works by Schonken, Saint-Saëns famous Morceau de concert for French horn and orchestra which will be performed by NMMU’s music student, Dylan Barker, and Messager’s solo de concours for clarinet and orchestra will be performed by UFS music student, Naldei Dweba.
The second half will truly be the highlight of the concert collaboration as audiences we be treated to one of the most loved works from the symphonic repertoire, Dvo?ák’s symphony no. 8. This is definitely a concert not to be missed.
