Six suspects were arrested and two firearms confiscated in two separate incidents yesterday 15 October 2016. The suspects are detained for unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.
On Saturday, 15 October 2015 at about 09:50 members from SAPS Gelvandale responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle in Liebenberg Street. As the members were following the vehicle, the driver and passenger alighted from the vehicle in an attempt tried to flee. The police officer saw the passenger disposed of a firearm. A 9mm pistol with 2 rounds of ammunition was recovered and a 29 year suspect arrested. The firearm was reported stolen in Bethelsdorp this month.
On the same day, at about 19:20, 5 suspects aged between 17 and 25 years old were arrested by Bethelsdorp Vispol members. While patrolling Ext 31 in Bethelsdorp, the members noticed a Toyota Corolla with 5 occupants. Due to the number of people in the car, police became suspicious and stopped the vehicle. The vehicle was cornered in Biscuit street. The driver was seen opening the door also disposing of a firearm. All five suspects detained on unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. An Astra pistol and 8 rounds seized.
The arrested suspects will appear in court today, 17 October 2016.
