Port Elizabeth based Mantis Group has received a 6-month extension on the caretaker contract of Fish River Resort on the Sunshine Coast, Eastern Cape. Accommodation and golf bookings can be made until 31 January 2020. The Department of Rural and Land Affairs appointed the Port Elizabeth based, world-renowned Mantis group to take care of the estate and generate revenue from the golf, food & beverage and accommodation facilities of the Fish River Resort while all legal and administrative matters under the land claim were being ironed out.
The Fish River Resort comprises a hotel with 40 self-catering units, restaurant, bar, children’s play facilities, a large swimming pool, pro shop, and Gary Player-designed championship 18-hole course. This resort has been a beacon in Eastern Cape Tourism for over 30 years, and a mammoth undertaking for any management company. Since April 2018, The Group has managed to keep the golf course in pristine condition, and upgraded the putt-putt course and kids outdoor play park. General Manager, Ashley Palm, has been able to keep some of the original Fish River staff on the payroll and re-opened a golf shop, and the bar, and restaurant. Families and golfers from all over South Africa have enjoyed fantastic accommodation, golf, food, and service at Fish River.
The Mantis Group took a deeper interest in Fish River, and under the management of Ashley Palm, Fish River Resort also became the host to some pertinent community upliftment programmes. The Mantis Community Upliftment Programme is based here, and in 2019, this programme has invested in youth golf development in the townships outside Port Alfred. The MCUP also hosted 2 weeks of hospitality training for unemployed adults in the rural areas around the Fish River and Peddie.
With the 6-month extension to Mantis; Fish River will continue providing tourists with quality service and facilities. There will also be a continuation of golf development clinics, hospitality training, and other community development programmes.
