Saving Our Chubby Unicorns

Chubby Unicorn

Friday 4 October is #WorldAnimalDay. This year, the World Wide Fund for Nature South Africa (WWF-SA) has chosen to shine a light on the plight of a majestic mammal which has been lovingly dubbed "a unicorn that has let itself go." Not just because of its impressive horn, but also the fact that one of the rhino's closest living relatives is the horse! Believe it or not, rhinos and horses share a common ancestor, and are on the same branch of the evolutionary tree. All five remaining rhino species at risk of extinction There are only five remaining rhinoceros species in the world - Black, …

Eastern Cape residents urged to use water sparingly

Settlers Dam

Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has called on Limpopo and Eastern Cape residents to reduce water use after their dam levels dropped to an alarming 52% this week. The latest weekly report on dam levels shows that dam levels across the country are dropping at an average of 1% week-on-week. “Sustained heavy summer rains across South Africa are the only hope to alleviate the situation. In the absence of rain, water conservation across the board must be intensified to avoid municipalities imposing stringent water restrictions,” Sisulu said. Recent high …

1.3 million incidents of housebreaking in 2018/19

Victims of crime in South Africa are apathetic to report their ordeals to police, the 2018/19 Governance, Public Safety and Justice Survey (Victims of Crime) report has suggested. The report, which was released by Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke on Thursday, painted a worrying picture of how victims were not reporting crimes such as housebreaking, home robbery and deliberate damage of property and arson. The survey provides statistics for two of the trio crimes -- vehicle hijacking and home robbery. Business robbery is excluded. During the financial year under review, Statistics …

Calls for EC Departments to adopt “No Means No Worldwide” programmes in Eastern Cape Schools

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE This week I tabled a motion in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature to address the surge of gender-based violence against women and children, through the adoption of the “No Means No Worldwide” programme in Eastern Cape schools. There is clear evidence that violence in schools in the province, against learners and teachers, is on the increase. There have been at least three fatalities on school premises with a further 79 learners and 49 teachers have been injured due to gang related violence in schools. This is unacceptable! No child or teacher should fear being …

Sizani Healthcare Plan will achieve what NHI can’t

Mmusi Maimane Donkin

The following remarks were made today by Democratic Alliance (DA) Leader, Mmusi Maimane, during a visit the Eastern Cape towns of Alexandria, Port Alfred and Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown). My fellow South Africans For a country that spends what we do on healthcare, it is shameful that so many of our citizens do not have access to decent healthcare services. South Africa spends over R220 billion across all departments and entities annually. This should be enough to pay for quality healthcare for each and every South African resident, but thanks to corruption, mismanagement and poor …
