Flipping entrepreneurs raise funds on Pancake Day

MyPE Logo

As part of its commitment to support and strengthen the local communities in which it trades, Checkers invited local schools to sell pancakes at their nearest store on Saturday, 9 March, in support of Pancake Day. Checkers provided all the necessary ingredients, but the schools had to take charge of the project: from mixing the pancake batter to manning their stall, managing sales and interacting with customers. Schools were rewarded for their hard work by keeping all proceeds, thereby raising some much-needed funds. Author: Angelique Wagner Website: …

What we know about how big the Eskom bailout will be

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Minister of Finance, Tito Mboweni, has confirmed in a letter to the Democratic Alliance (DA) that the National Treasury does not know how big the proposed bailout to Eskom will be. Following the National Energy Regulator’s (Nersa) announcement of tariff increases, the DA wrote to the Minister to request an update on the bailout allocation to Eskom, given that the tariffs granted are lower than what the Treasury used to calculate the bailout announced in the 2019 National Budget. In his budget speech the Minister said that they will give Eskom bailouts of R23 billion per …

Give Your Home a Bit of Hygge

The Danish concept of hygge (pronounced “hue-geh”) has been taking the world by storm of late. Founded on the principle of recognising – and encouraging – moments of extraordinary contentment, cosiness, or social fulfilment, it has been billed by many as the next ‘big thing’ in design and décor trends. With that in mind, it’s a little ironic that hygge is not actually about material possessions (even if it has been used to sell many a fluffy blanket and scented candle in its time). If anything, hygge disdains the notion that expensive objects and brand-name items are the keys to fulfilment, …

4 Years Spent Seeking the Light at the End of the Tunnel

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE Today marks the fourth anniversary since Cyril Ramaphosa promised South Africans “light at the end of the tunnel” on the Eskom electricity crisis. As the country continues to buckle under the sustained and relentless pressures of the failing ANC’s rolling power blackouts – government is yet to provide South Africans with a clear plan of action to keep the lights on. On, 20 March 2015, then Deputy President Ramaphosa stated in Parliament that “We can say there will be light at the end of the tunnel. As we all know Eskom faces challenges and these challenges are being addressed”. …

Do or Die OR Pride?

Pro14 Logo

Local Guiness Pro14 fans will have a choice between Do or Die and Pride this weekend as the Southern Kings and Toyota Cheetahs enter the dying phases of the competition. It will be a case of do or die for the Toyota Cheetahs in the fourth-last pool round of Guinness PRO14 on Saturday as they meet the Glasgow Warriors in Scotland in a match that could seal their fate in the competition. The Isuzu Southern Kings, meanwhile, will be determined to create an upset against playoff contenders, Ulster, in Ireland on Saturday as they look to build on a season in which they challenged a number of …

The Isuzu Southern Kings have announced a 25-man that will travel to Belfast to take on Ulster in a Guinness PRO14 Round 18 clash on Saturday, March 23. The team leaves for Ireland from Port Elizabeth on Wednesday evening, which will be the side’s final trip overseas for the 2018/19 Guinness PRO14 season. Uitenhage Poultry Producer Expands Again

Sovereign Foods, the third largest poultry producer in South Africa, today announced the acquisition of the Blue Hills hatchery in Midrand. The hatchery was previously known as Hyline Africa which was a commercial layer grandparent facility. Sovereign’s expansion began three years ago with the acquisition and upgrading of an abattoir in Hartbeespoort, a landmark empowerment and preferential off-take agreement with BEE group Cultiver, and now this hatching facility in Gauteng. “The acquisition of this hatchery allows us to be almost self-sufficient in the supply of day-old chicks. As per the ENCA News Anchor, DID Mr Gordhan really say this?

My faith in the media and them doing the basics of their job has been severely tested of late. A local hack accused me of disseminating 'Fake News' with this article that scooped all the so-called major media recently: PE Diver Spat out by Whale I have observed how time and again media have failed to apply the basic principle of any story: Answer the 5W’s and 1H: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. And then I saw this tweet from ENCA News Anchor, Michelle Craig that said; In response to a question from a US journalist, Pravin Gordhan says, "We have far less crises than your country …

Load Shedding Putting Pressure on Municipal Water Supply

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is experiencing multiple shutdowns at various Water treatment Works as well as large Pump stations daily due to Load shedding. The extended shutdown duration of stage 4 load shedding makes it impossible to recuperate storage as there simply aren't enough pumping hours left in the day. This issue was further compounded by 2 separate breakdowns experienced on the supply system, however teams are busy with repairs. We urgently call on all consumers within NMBM to reduce consumption drastically to avoid areas from experiencing interruptions in …

Municipality to Accelerate ATTP

The residents of Nelson Mandela Bay can expect accelerated service delivery, biased to the poorest of the poor - thanks to the payment of the last Equitable Tranche of R234 million to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) by National Treasury on 19 March 2019. As things stand, National Treasury does not owe the City a cent as far as this matter is concerned for the 2018/19 financial year. This follows the delayed payment of an Equitable Share allocation that was supposed to be paid in December 2018 and ended up being paid in February 2019, based on a number of compliance issues that …

Truth in Advertising – SA Government says; “Darker Days Ahead”

Eskom Selfie

South Africans will again have to bear another round of rotational Stage 4 load shedding which got underway at 9am this morning. “Stage 4 load shedding will be implemented on Wednesday, 20 March 2019 from 9am to 11pm. This is due to a shortage of capacity,” said the power utility on Wednesday. The power utility said load shedding is a highly controlled process, implemented to protect the system and to prevent a total collapse of the system or a national blackout. During Stage 4 load shedding, approximately 80% of the country’s demand is still being met. “Eskom’s maintenance teams …
