The Riderless Horse Memorial – Featured Blog

Today's posts from our featured Port Elizabeth Blogger: The Riderless Horse Memorial by Port Elizabeth Daily Photo: The Horse Memorial has always been one of my favorite monuments around Port Elizabeth.  Not just for what it looks like, but more importantly for what it stands for.  Port Elizabeth was the main port of entry for horses and mules used by the British forces during the Anglo Boar War (1899 - 1902).  During the war more than 300 000 horses died in British service.  The people of Port Elizabeth was very much aware of the plight of the horses and after the war …

Sykes to Captain Southern Kings

Steven Robert Sykes

The Southern Kings have selected a strong squad to take on the SWD Eagles at Outeniqua Park in George tomorrow, with Steven Sykes being selected to captain the side. Southern Kings Head Coach, Deon Davids, said he had selected Sykes based on his experience and because he had shown leadership in the group. "We gave Edgar (Marutlulle) and Schalk (Ferreira) leadership opportunities during the session against NMMU Madibaz last week, and want to see how Sykes will manage the role," he said. "It is important that you have a few leaders available to you in the group," he said. Davids said …

Bucket Toilet crisis: Mokonyane and Jordaan both turn a blind eye

MyPE Logo

The following is an extract from a speech delivered by DA NMB Mayoral Candidate, Athol Trollip, to the media during an oversight visit of houses with bucket toilets in Missionvale, Port Elizabeth. After visiting Walmer Township last year and witnessing the undignified way in which tens of thousands of our people are still forced to use bucket toilets, I am deeply disappointed to learn that both the NMB Municipality and the national government refuse to resolve the bucket toilet slight on the dignity of our people. Minister Mokonyane has written to dodge all accountability, and to deflect …

Eunice Sibiya

With January already behind us, 2016 is shaping up as a challenging year for most South Africans; now is the time to review your budget. "This year could be testing for consumers as interest rate hikes and price increases on everyday goods are set to have a detrimental effect on your pocket," says Eunice Sibiya, Head of Consumer Education at FNB. There has never been a more pressing time to be financially prudent and to start employing sound financial tactics to get you through the year. The truth is if you want to survive this slump you will have no choice but to draw up a water-tight …

Global commodities slump provides opportunity for beneficiation

MyPE Logo

If one takes a conventional and - dare I say it - colonial viewpoint on the prospects for a commodity producer like South Africa then the signs aren't good. Bringing home the seriousness of the challenge facing the country is the announcement on Monday, February 1 by Kumba Iron Ore that it would be laying off over four thousand workers and contractors. Other mines will be under pressure - World Bank analysts expect prices for 37 of the 46 commodities the bank monitors to fall in 2016. Economists and investors at the World Economic Forum held in January 2016 in Davos, Switzerland were …

On his discovery a family tries to integrate him into society, and the story unpacks issues of acceptance and tolerance in a fun, light-hearted way, with pockets of darkness. Today's posts from our featured Port Elizabeth Blogger: My house is not selling! Sorry FW – you started well then failed – #RaceFreeMonth

February has been declared Race Free Month and every day in February we at MyPE will be combating the subtle racist nuances that hamper our thinking, cloud our judgement, restrict our development and increase the tension in South Africa. White South Africans should continue to try and understand and acknowledge the pain and humiliation that apartheid caused black, coloured and Indian people, FW de Klerk said on Tuesday 2 February, going on to say that "many South Africans were living in 'white bubbles', oblivious to the problems around them." Aaaah I though - what a great start to what must …
