Are you one of the Sandwich Generation?

The number of people supporting their children as well as their parents is growing, reducing their ability to save for emergencies, a study shows. This is one of the research findings of this year’s Old Mutual Savings and Investment Monitor. The full results will be released next week. In fact, 25% of all working metropolitan South Africans now fall into this Sandwich Generation category, the highest percentage since the Monitor’s launch in 2009, the researchers said in a statement. The financial consequence of having two generations of dependants is starkly revealed by the …

He was appointed as the attack and specialist skills coach, and then took charge of the provincial team on their return to the Currie Cup Premier Division in 2014. In 2015 he resumed his duties as the attack and specialist skills coach following the …

Despatch return to form

Eastern Province Rugby Logo

Despatch returned to their winning ways with a solid 38-10 over Grahamstown Brumbies in the EP Grand Challenge competition on Saturday (July 18), running in six tries in the process. The home side led 35-5 at the break, but seemed to take their foot off the pedal somewhat in the second half as the Brumbies produced an improved performance. In two surprise results Windvogel registered their second win of the season when they edged Gardens 17-15, while Progess put a spike in Park's progress up the log with a narrow 8-6 win in Uitenhage. In a weekend of close results, Trying Stars edged …

Buying a home costs more than just the bond

Adrian Goslett (3:2)

When it comes to purchasing a home there are more financial elements to take into consideration than just the bond repayment. This is according Adrian Goslett, Regional Director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa, who points out that while the bond repayment is a major consideration, there are also a number of other costs that a potential home buyer will need to make provision for. “Very often when buyers are looking for a home that they can afford, they look at how much they will need to pay on their bond each month. But it is important to remember that buyers are also responsible for …

No delivery from Koukamma Post Office

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE Koukamma residents are totally frustrated with the Kareedouw Post Office which has not delivered their mail for at least three weeks.  There is allegedly one official currently employed at this office.  Post Office employees are forced to drive 57 kilometres from Humansdorp to sort out mail in Kareedouw. DA Member of Parliament, Elza van Lingen, is already in the process of contacting the Director-General of the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services, Rosey Sekese, to find out why this service has collapsed and what steps will she take to restore this …

Private sector urged to contribute to the grid and save costs with green electricity

MyPE Logo

Small-scale embedded energy generation has real potential to ease South Africa’s electricity crisis, and to assist private businesses and consumers with the significant challenges they face with load shedding and rocketing tariffs, while contributing to much needed local economic development. Elana Keef, sustainability planner at AfriCoast Energy, said the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality had emerged as a national leader in embedded energy generation. “The Municipality is at the forefront of pioneering a new model of energy security in South Africa through private sector investment in …

South Africa’s wealth scorecard

High levels of government intervention, high tax rates, complicated investment opportunities and a high level of trade union involvement have weighed down South Africa's wealth scorecard, a study revealed on Tuesday. New World Wealth analyst Andrew Amoils released findings that painted an average picture in terms of South Africa's wealth prospects. "Based on our research, the factors that encourage wealth growth in a country include strong ownership rights, strong economic growth, a well-developed banking system and stock market, free and independent media, a low level of government …

Bleak near term economic outlook

John Loos

The SARB (South African Reserve Bank) Leading Business Cycle Indicator continued to point to a bleak near term economic outlook, recording a year-on-year decline of -3.4% in May 2015. The indicator, often a good indicator of what economic activity growth will do in the near term, has now recorded its 20th consecutive month of year-on-year decline. Month-on-month, the May decline was an equally dismal -1.72%, although month-on-month rates of change can admittedly be volatile. The list of negative contributing factors is a lengthy one now. The residential property sector played a key negative …

Why Free Advertising isn’t what you thought it was

MyPE Logo

Like frogs in a pot of cold water on the stove business owners rush to list themselves on search engines, web properties and social media offering 'free' exposure (yes, like MyPE, too). As my late father always used to tell me; "There is no such thing as a free lunch" or "Never trust a man who won't take a drink!". Lets look at our mate Google who have a wonderful product called Google Maps and another wonderful product called Google AdSense. Now, AdSense enables Google to make pots of money by promising (and delivering) contextual based advertising - essentially anyone looking for say, …

Terry Price vs Derrick Inggs

Grahamstown – The father of dead teacher Jayde Panayiotou and the lawyer defending her husband, who is accused of murdering her, lashed out at each other in the Grahamstown High Court on Monday. During an adjournment in murder-accused Christopher Panayiotou's appeal against the Port Elizabeth Court's ruling denying him bail, Jayde's father Derick Inggs tried to get past a group of men that included advocate Terry Price. The event was filmed by eNCA. Appearing to be in a hurry and trying to squeeze past the group, Inggs puts his hand against one man's lower back and nudges him. The …

Reasons why your Guest House could be under-performing

South African minister of tourism Derek Hanekom

The SA tourism industry is being pounded on all fronts, with new legislation on unabridged birth certificates and visa restrictions packing the biggest punch, the latest SA Tourism Business Index (TBI) showed.
