Injury woes for EP Kings

Eastern Province Rugby Logo

The Eastern Province Kings coaches will have their work cut out for them as they ponder their team selection this week ahead of the clash against the Vodacom Blue Bulls. On the plus side, Charl du Plessis, who has been out with a rib injury, has been declared fit for selection, as has Gary van Aswegen, who missed out the last two games due to a groin strain. Both Siyanda Grey and Thembelani Bholi are currently off sick with chest infections, and will most likely not be eligible to play on Friday, although they will be re-evaluated by the medical team on Wednesday. Steven Sykes was also …

Cape Town kickoff for Madibaz Varsity Netball campaign

MyPE Logo

The SPAR Madibaz will have their eyes fixed on a playoff spot when they kick off their second Varsity Netball campaign against UCT in Cape Town on Sunday. The Port Elizabeth side made it through to the semi-finals of last year's inaugural tournament before being eliminated by eventual runners-up the University of the Free State (Kovsies). Madibaz netball manager Theresa le Roux said her new-look squad featured just seven of the 18 players from last season but that the youngsters were determined to reach the top four once more. "We have a good mixture of youth and experience." The …

DA hands over SAHRC complaint on Eastern Cape bucket toilets

MyPE Logo

Dear MyPE The following speech was delivered in Nelson Mandela Bay's Walmer Township today, by DA Shadow Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Kevin Mileham MP. Today, we hand over our complaint to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to investigate the rapid increase of the use of the bucket toilet system, particularly in the Eastern Cape. We will assist the SAHRC to determine why and where these horrific bucket toilet systems exist and how to get rid of them. We will also hand over our photographic evidence to the SAHRC following our own …

Businesswomens Association of SA Logo

Absa's SME Index for Q2 2014 reveals a marked shift in the South African labour market for women. The percentage of women who are self-employed has dropped from around 53% in 2008 to just over 44% in 2014. The number of employed women increased by 12,6% over the same period, indicating a sizeable shift to employment for women in the labour force, as only 1,8% more men were employed over the period. The number of self-employed men has increased by 8.2% from March 2008. By contrast, over 150 000 women have left self-employment for employment or for unpaid care and domestic work over the …

Education MEC has no plan for Afrikaans speaking teacher shortage

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE Eastern Cape MEC for Education Mandla Makupula has no plan to solve the shortage of Afrikaans speaking teachers for schools in the northern areas of Port Elizabeth. I was most disappointed with the MECs weak response during an interview last night on Fokus on SABC 3, where he was given the platform to explain his department's solutions to the ongoing education crisis in the Eastern Cape. He has no plan, nor solutions for the Northern Areas, where learners are predominantly Afrikaans-speaking. The MEC failed to inform the public that the department does not have enough …

Contemplating fixing the interest rate on your bond?

Interest Rates Graph

While the current prime interest rate is still considered to be comparatively low, Reserve Bank Governor, Gill Marcus has forewarned the South African public that we are currently in an increasing rate cycle and consumers should expect to see further rate hikes in the future. Considering this, it is no wonder that many homeowners are contemplating fixing the interest rate on their bonds, says Adrian Goslett, CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa. Who would benefit from a fixed interest rate? Goslett says that for homeowners who are risk averse or who want to have a fixed bond repayment that they …

Making buying a first home attainable

Home Property Investment

Many first-time home buyers find it difficult to enter the property market. They often pool borrowed resources to come up with a deposit to qualify for finance. A new banking product, the Family Springboard home loan, from Absa now formalises this financial arrangement whereby friends or family members can help first-time buyers to enter the property market by opening an Absa Fixed Deposit account and ceding 10% of the property purchase price as security for the loan. The process of buying a property needs to be simplified to permit more entrants into the property market, allowing …
