Reflections on Wheelchair Wednesday Initiative

MyPE Logo

I've never been someone who only waxes lyrical, despite the fact that I studied to be a lawyer - and that's why I completely endorse initiatives that prioritise action over apathy. The Wheelchair Wednesday project is one of those ideas that dispels inertia and prioritises activity. As a brainchild of our very own Association for Persons with Disabilities (APD), the Wheelchair Wednesday campaign is about highlighting the challenges experienced by people with disabilities, particularly those who are wheelchair-bound. By using high profile industry leaders to elevate the needs of people …

ABYC Interclub 2014

The recent World First Interclub Dinghy Sailing Regatta which took place from 26 to 28 April 2014 and contested on Port Elizabeth's North End Lake was won by the Algoa Bay Yacht Club. Of the 38 competitors that sailed in the three day regatta ABYC fielded 26 sailors, Redhouse Yacht Club 9 and Rhodes Sailing Club 3. The deck at the EP Powerboat club was thronged with spectators enjoying the sunshine, Fanta Browns and other frothy stuff as the sailors sailed 7 races over the three days. Regular fisherman watched gape mouthed as sailors whizzed past their lines. Braai fires dotted the shores …

Daniel Rowe, a 20 year-old HMS (Human Movement Science) student at NMMU (Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University) is the first Port Elizabethan to lead the Engen Volkswagen Cup championship since series champions Tschops Sipuka and Michael Stephen in the mid-2000s. Engen Volkswagen Cup is part of the national Super Series which competes at Aldo Scribante Raceway on Saturday, 3 May, round three of the national season. The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) has been recognised for its empowerment efforts after being awarded the Job Creation Award at the 13th Annual Oliver Empowerment Awards at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg on Friday evening. The CDC was also one of four recipients of a RAIZCORP bursary to the value of R250 000. The bursary is to be awarded to a black business owner from the CDC's supply chain. Head to Scribante for some door-bashing action

MyPE Logo

The Engen Volkswagen Cup championship heads to the Friendly City for some decidedly robust racing action on Saturday, 3 May. The field of Volkswagen Polo Vivo race cars has had five weeks to straighten panels, knock out the dents and replace side mirrors since their second championship round at Killarney. With the season shaping up to be a hotly contested one, it is likely the racers will leave the Port Elizabeth round with a bit more work to do on their cars. Following the first two events, Port Elizabeth racer Daniel Rowe (11 – Ferodo Racing) has amassed the most points to lead the …

Production car racing moves to PE

Michael Stephen Killarney

The Bridgestone Production Car Championship moves to Port Elizabeth for round three of the Super Series on Saturday, 3 May. The fight for points has built in intensity with the Port Elizabeth event promising to be the most challenging yet. Four Audi S4 quattro racers will take to the track, two of whom are right at the front of the pack and leading the national championship. At Killarney, round two of the season, PE's Michael Stephen (A1 - Engen Xtreme) wrestled the lead away from Gennaro Bonafede (A32 - Audi Sasolracing). Stephen now enters his home event seven points ahead - but …

‘James Bond’ on North End Lake

MyPE Logo

Almost like a visit from James Bond - watch as this rider rises out of the 'mist' from the waters of the North End Lake on his flyboard. The Flyboard was invented in spring 2011 by a French watercraft rider, Franky Zapata. He built many prototypes before perfecting the design which allows the device to climb out of the water and be stable in the air. Watch as our Port Elizabeth rider rises out of the water, chickens out when a boat comes too close and then flies across the water as we see the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in the background. http://youtu.be/jUuNjgK9HMw Creator: …

2 out of 4 for Madibaz Cricket

MyPE Logo

After impressive performances in the run-up to the final of the Momentum National Club Cricket Championship, the NMMU-Madibaz once again came unstuck against Tuks at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Monday. Tuks batted first and laid the foundation for a third consecutive title with an imposing score of 316/6 in their 50 overs. In reply, the Madibaz lost early wickets and never fully recovered to be bowled out for 222 in 40 overs - 94 runs short. "We have played in the final four times in the past six years," said Madibaz cricket manager Riaan Osman after his team's second loss in-a-row …
