Free Maths Lessons

The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) is giving the Grade 12 classes of 2011 and 2012 a second shot at success by offering free lessons to learners who are rewriting their final examinations for mathematics and science. Coega today called for applications from learners who are writing the exams in November 2013. The pilot project, launched by the CDC's Maths and Science Academy, is offering lessons to learners who either failed or fared poorly in mathematics and science under the National Curriculum Statement and who have already enrolled through the Department of Education for a …

Rehabilitation of John Tallant and a section of Old Grahamstown Road underway

The rehabilitation of John Tallant Road, an important arterial connecting the hub of Uitenhage and Despatch to the N2, as well as a section of Old Grahamstown Road is underway. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's Portfolio Chairperson for Infrastructure, Engineering, Electricity and Energy, Cllr Andile Mfunda, said that the completion of Trunk Road 63 (TR 63) between Despatch and Redhouse led to an increase of traffic along TR 63 and John Tallant Road. "The increase in traffic led to the deterioration of the pavement structure on John Tallant and Grahamstown Roads and the problem was …

Injustices of the Past

An article in the Sunday Times (Lifestyle) of 14/04/2013, “It Takes a Thief” attracts attention. It is about Helmuth Grote, a convicted bank robber who served 6 years of a 15 years sentence. What made the story unique is the fact that the robber, besides heading a blockwatch in Johannesburg, with the blessing of PSIRA, is also a serving police reservist in the SAPS. Without trying to beat life into the proverbial dead horse, I was comparing this to the way Allen Mounter was accused, threatened with a very questionable constitution and humiliated by Humewood SAPS and Humewood CPF. Richmond …

How NOT to market on Social Networks

Consider this - 140 characters is not enough to enable you contribute meaningfully to any discourse and the walled garden of Facebook is designed to lock you in to that site so that ever more adverts can be served up to you. Here are two activities by Social Media 'gurus' that irk me: Posting links from one Social Networking site to other Social Networking sites - you are just increasing traffic between Social Networks and showing that you don't really know how to decide which social network is best for you. Giving away stuff if people follow you - this can only lock you into a cycle …

Schildknecht makes victory look effortless

Ronnie Schildknecht

Cast your mind back almost one year and all the talk was about the torrid conditions creating one of the toughest but most memorable IRONMAN events ever experienced on the African continent and for many, anywhere in the world. This year, in stark contrast, Nelson Mandela Bay blessed athletes with near perfect conditions while spectators were enjoyed some scintillating racing as Switzerland's Ronnie Schildknecht took it home in the men's PRO field and USA's Jessie Donavan came up trumps for the ladies. The MyPE Weather Guru got the prediction spot …

Port Elizabeth Sailor in Les Voiles de Saint Barth regatta win

Music - Michael Giles

MUSIC, a South African Swan 53 owned and skippered by James Blakemore and crewed by young South African sailors beat stiff competition to take the Spinnaker 1 class at Les Voiles de Saint Barth regatta on Sunday 14 April. Sunday's conditions suited the heavier Swan, which saw them post a 3-2-1-1-1 overall and landing them the top spot ahead of Defiance (USA). Patrick Demarchelier's Puffy, with Marc Guillemot, offshore solo sailing star guest helming, reveled in the breeze posting a third. "The whole crew is based in Cape Town, although I live in Johannesburg now, but am from Cape Town …
