Trustees can be held personally liable for their actions

Charlotte Vermaak

This week the Property Poser panel deals with a sticky situation relating to the trustees' responsibilities when it comes to repairs and maintenance in a sectional title complex. In this instance, the driveways of the complex had to be resurfaced with tar and a special levy was raised to cover the cost. The reader reports that the first section was very poorly done and it was not long before the tar started lifting and sticking to car tyres. In the end, only a small number of the driveways were completely retarred, with the rest of the surfaces simply being patched, leaving unsightly …

Business Reveals Sole

MyPE Logo

Business went barefoot yesterday in aid of kids and the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber led the way in the One Day Without Shoes initiative by using their Top 40 under 40 achievers to drive the initiative in their own companies, and encouraging their members to get on board. The Top 40 Under 40 CSI Initiative received a phenomenal response with already more than 500 pairs of shoes collected or dropped off at the Business Chamber, for donation to the Metro's Education task team to help children and young adults without shoes right here in Port Elizabeth, Nelson Mandela Bay. The Chamber's …

Results of the Splash Festival Accommodation Survey

We are in agreement that large local events are held not only to raise the profile of our city but also to attract 'foreign' money into our economy. This injection of 'foreign' money helps to grow our local economy by attracting money from outside of our municipal boundaries into Port Elizabeth. Just stirring the dwindling available money around in the Port Elizabeth pot doesn't really achieve anything. In a recent snap survey sent to 263 accommodation providers, MyPE asked these questions: How many bed nights have you sold in the past directly attributable to the Splash Festival? If …

Thanks for the Money Ratepayers, This is how we waste it!

Trying to get straight and quick answers out of most of the people involved in the Splash Festival is frustrating to say the least. The Splash Festival event is 'owned' by the Municipality and funded by around R2 million from the ratepayers. Every year the Municipality uses ratepayer money to choose an events company to provide entertainment. 2012's chosen events company was Go Big. Despite my personal relationships with previous organisers I was pleased to see that the Municipality was awarding the event to a company that had the right BEE credentials. But, apparently, being Coloured …

Splash Festival offers no significant ‘Foreign’ Money flow into Port Elizabeth

Events like the Splash Festival, Specsavers Ironman, International Rugby, International Cricket, Boardwalk Hobie 16 Nationals, Weekend Post Ocean Racing Series and The Herald VW Cycle Tour are held not only to raise the profile of our city but also to attract 'foreign' money into our economy. The ONE way that we are going to grow our local economy is by attracting money from outside of our municipal boundaries into Port Elizabeth. Just stirring the dwindling available money around in the pot doesn't really achieve anything. As a staunch supporter of the Splash Festival I attempted this year …

Maybe a Free Listing on MyPE is too MUCH

After sending each business on MyPE an e-mail to update their business details in the MyPE Directory I received a desperate plea from one to remove two of their adverts/listings on MyPE. Due to a change in business focus they were no longer hiring out caravans and now only trading in second hand vans. Michelle wrote about the number of calls that they were receiving; "..its getting incredibly frustrating for hubby and I as the phone goes all the time to rent out our vans....truly!" I have now removed two of their listings and given the one remaining one some attention and changes. And it …

SuperVan Sarel van der Merwe

MyPE Logo

My one abiding memory of Sarel van der Merwe is of him being interviewed on television and the presenter asking him why he never smiled, to which he replied behind steely eyes and in his gruff voice; "I am smiling!" I swear I heard spaghetti western music and the clink of his stirrups! This Port Elizabeth born rally driver, was a multiple South African Rally Drivers Champion who held numerous Championship titles including the South African Rally Drivers Championship (1975 and 1977-1985), the South African Saloon Car Championship (1988 and 1994) and the South African Modified Saloon Car …
