Hungry Car Guards

Dear Editor I have this idea about hungry car guards and I am not sure if it will go anywhere or who to send it to. We all know that car guards and beggars, for that matter, are a pain and most people don't want to give them money as they will most likely spend it on booze or other non food items What if we could get the Pick 'n Pays or Spars of the town to make up a R5 food voucher booklet that is only redeemable at the participating shops. Members of the public could then buy a book of these vouchers and then hand these out to the guys so that they can at least get something to eat …

Consumer Protection Act Already Changing Business Operations

Revolutionary or a double edged sword, the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) comes into effect on 1 April. What is certain is that the act will change the way consumers and businesses operate on South African soil. Here in Port Elizabeth we have already seen the withdrawing of a SMS campaign. According to the Department of Trade and Industry (dti), the act aims to promote and advance the social and economic welfare of South Africans through a legal framework for the achievement of a fair, accessible, responsible and sustainable market. It also aims to reduce disadvantages experienced in …

February PPI up to 6.7%

The Producer Price Index (PPI) in February increased more than expected in February, rising to 6.7 percent. Statistics South Africa said on Thursday that PPI, which is the prices of goods leaving factories and mines, rose to 6.7 percent from 5.5 percent in January. The higher annual rate could be explained by increases in the annual rate of change in the PPI for mining and quarrying, basic metals, products of petroleum and coal, agriculture, manufacturing, food, beverages and electrical machinery and apparatus. “Producer inflation will rise further this year, as the impact of …

Traffic Cop Stop – Papa Wag Vir Jou

A good friend of MyPE spends a considerable amount of time on our roads. Being a consumate multitasker his Nikon D90 Digital Camera is always close at hand to photograph some of the crazy illegal moves by the vehicles in front of him. Naturally the animal known as Taxius Minbusus is the one that gravitates the most towards the camera - it being the most photogenic and agile of the animals and other hogs that we find on the road. We will be bringing you an image a day of the animal road antics as seen through the lens of our undercover 'Steve Irwin of Port Elizabeth Roads'. Each image will be …

Driving Schools Accuse EC Traffic Departments of Widespread Corruption

The Democratic Alliance is calling for an investigation into the issuing of driver's licences in the province. When we allow drivers on the road who cannot drive, they are not only placing their lives in danger but also that of others. Several driving schools have approached the DA in the legislature to deal with apparent corruption within many municipal traffic departments and the Department of Transport (DoT) in general. It must be said that they played open cards in saying that they are members of the ANC, but because ANC officials do not listen to their woes, they have approached …

But Fletcher Do You Know LKJ?

Every phenomenon has its origin - and the evolution of dub in South Africa is often pinned on one pioneering deejay who had the insight to pick up on an underground international trend and bring it to South Africa in the mid-90s. By constantly keeping a keen ear to the ground, Fletcher Beadon has always been aware of what stirs just beneath the surface of the main stream SA music scene. And that's exactly why he is revisiting his old boogie ground - to reconnect with the city that nurtured, at least initially, his rising star and give a bit of groove back. "I noticed last year that Port …
