Does This Point to the Warriors Winning the Pro20?

Chevrolet and the Chevrolet Warriors on Thursday night beat top national sport sponsorship campaigns to win the Best Sponsorship of a Sport Team or Individual category at the inaugural Virgin Active Sport Industry Awards 2011. Chevrolet and the Chevrolet Warriors were up against major national sponsorships including ABSA and Castle Lager's Bafana Bafana sponsorship, Nike's Lead with our Players campaign, and SASOL's sponsorship of the Springboks. The judges, however, singled out Chevrolet and the Chevrolet Warriors' integrated marketing efforts which yielded a significant 5:5 return on …

Don’t Hoot at the Cyclists Please

Nelson Mandela Bay motorists should remain calm tomorrow (Tuesday, 22 February) when the eyes of the international cycling community will be on Nelson Mandela Bay for the Cell C Tour of South Africa. Rolling road closures require some discipline and understanding from public motorists as well as a commitment to obey traffic officials and marshals. In total 14 international teams are competing in this competition in perhaps the biggest international cycling event since we last had a cycling of similar magnitude 21 years ago. The Nelson Mandela Bay leg entails the following: Tuesday …

All Eyes on the 2011 Budget

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan is set to deliver the 2011 national budget this week, with business looking forward to a speech which will boost business confidence following a global recession. Company tax relief is expected to be limited and focused on encouraging capital expenditure as well as job creation, according to Nedbank's economic unit. The bank, along with Business Unity South Africa (BUSA), expects clarification on R20 billion in tax incentives for manufacturing investments announced by President Jacob Zuma in the State of the Nation Address. It is likely that there will …

Got The Site But No Bookings?

As a web designer I often get contacted by people saying that they don't think that their website is performing well online. Most often they say that they are not getting enquiries, sales or bookings. The term for this type of interaction between users and websites is called "conversion". Conversion is when a user converts from being just a visitor or reader to someone who makes contact either by making a booking, requesting rates, buying a product and even something as simple as making a comment on a blog post. Let's create a scenario: You are a website owner running a Port Elizabeth …

PE Golf Club 10 Year Enviromental Plan

MyPE Logo

A key initiative of the club is to generate a 10-year course development plan. This plan is in its early stages and it is intended to present a draft for comment by members at the March AGM. The plan will be a living document evolving over time so input from members is welcome even now during the drafting stage. If any member wishes to make an input please contact David Nicolas, the CEO any time. In simple terms the plan will detail where we will be after removal of invasive alien species with zones where fynbos has recovered, coastal thicket has been restored, grasslands encouraged, …

No Rain, Yet Dam Levels Increase

In the past 'eagle eyed' readers have questioned the reported dam levels not increasing after rains over Port Elizabeth. Today we have an increase in dam levels despite no rain over (My) Port Elizabeth for the last week. A lesson for us all - if it rains where you are, it doesn't mean that it is ALSO raining in the catchment area and vice versa people. The total amount of water available increased by 737 megalitres to 97 504 Ml and exceeded the 35% capacity mark for the first time this year. Major Storage Dam levels supplying the Metro (as at 21 Feb 2011), Capacity - Volume of …

Flowers, Councillor, Arrange Them

Dear Councillor Trent, I email you this afternoon to offer advice I believe will be fundamental to your future sense of self-satisfaction. You are an angry woman, Ms. Trent. An angry woman. If there's anything that upsets me in this world, it is a woman getting her knickers in a twist. Knickers should not be twisted. They should be well laundered with softening agent and then sit comfortably twixt buttocks. I have not laid eyes on your undergarments, but I suspect them to resemble a lasso. Take a chill pill, Councillor Trent. Look into flower arranging courses and perhaps setting up …

Baakens Valley Concerns

We have been walking through the valley in the vicinity of Little Walmer Golf Estate for some years now. Some two years ago the alien vegetation was cleared and the beautiful fynbos emerged. For the last few years there has been no effort to clear the Port Jackson which is now rampant. Its now necessary for us to walk carrying a firearm. The vegetation is now a serious fire hazard and I shudder to think of the consequences for the townhouse developments bordering the area if a fire should rip through the area. Cyclists have created paths in the area but their hard work has been in …
