The Democratic Alliance (DA) is pleased that the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) passed its budget, which will ensure that we are able to continue changing the lives of the Bay’s residents, especially the poor.
We have always worked to put the people first and the passing of the R12 billion budget is a clear indicator of that commitment.
The African National Congress (ANC), along with their henchmen the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and United Democratic Movement (UDM) have failed once again in their desperate attempt to disrupt governance and service delivery to the people of Nelson Mandela Bay. With the co-operation from our coalition partners and African Independent Congress (AIC), council approved the Nelson Mandela Bay’s budget for the 2018/2019 financial year.
The proposed budget was submitted by Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, two weeks ago and the ANC led opposition block tried by all means to collapse the process by promising the AIC the return of Matatiele to KwaZulu-Natal if they vote against the budget with them. The AIC saw right through their dirty tricks.
The budget is intended for the acquisitioning of land for housing developments; various Human Settlement projects, resurfacing of tar roads, replacement of fleet vehicles, the reconstruction of Tyinira Road in Motherwell, the eradication of bucket toilets, as well as ground water drought intervention.
The DA would like to thank its coalition partners, the Congress of the People (COPE), African Christian Democratic Party (ACPD), AIC and the Patriotic Alliance (PA) in NMB for displaying once again their unwavering commitment to serve the people of this Metro.
This pro-poor budget clearly shows that our government is committed to bringing change to the poor and historically marginalised.
The work we doing in the Bay is only the beginning, we are working to take our brand of ‘people first’ governance to the Eastern Cape Provincial Government when the people of the province vote for change.
DA Eastern Cape Provincial Leader
