Dear MyPE
Hundreds of residents of Sizakhele and Goodwin Park townships in Bedford, are suffering due to a lack of adequate housing – housing that was promised to them by the failing ANC government.
Yesterday, 16 January 2019, I conducted an oversight inspection at Sizakhele and was joined by Ross Purdon, Ntsikana Constituency Leader, and Cecilia Auld, Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality Councillor and Constituency Chairperson.
Residents told me they have been experiencing challenges regarding housing applications, beneficiary lists and the eventual allocation of houses. Allegations of corruption in these processes are rife.
There are many examples of beneficiaries who were allocated erf numbers but eventually these houses were given to people from outside the community, some of whom were allegedly never on the original list.
In May 2016 the Department of Human Settlements ordered many people in the Goodwin Park township to vacate their houses so that problems could be rectified. No emergency housing was given to them.
The rectification of the houses is still not complete due to issues with the contractor. The repairs have still not been completed, due to issues with the contractor.
I have tasked Kevin Mileham, EC Premier Campaign Spokesperson for Basic Services, to take this issue up in parliament.
A DA government will manage the honest and efficient delivery of adequate housing, water, electricity and sanitation.
Only the DA can bring change that builds One South Africa for All. Where we govern, we keep our promises and deliver for all.
The power to bring real change to the Eastern Cape and South Africa is in the hands of the people.
Regards
Nqaba Bhanga
DA EC Premier Candidate
