Faculty of Science Public Relations intern Nolusindiso Hleko says the purpose of Science Discovery Week is to introduce learners to the fascinating fields of science in a fun and informal setting. The event is run annually by NMMU.
“One of the major benefits for learners is getting exposed to the different science fields before they apply for tertiary education.
“It is an opportunity for them to get more information to make a more informed decision when choosing a science course to study – because they will at least have a clear idea of what the course entails.”
Daily activities for the learners will include visits to the various Science Faculty departments where they will participate in subject-specific experiments.
Activities will take place in the following Science Departments: Biochemistry & Microbiology, Chemistry, Mathematics & Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computing Sciences, Statistics, Botany, Zoology, and Geosciences.
“Discovery Week also provides an opportunity for learners to be actively involved in performing experiments while gaining more knowledge on science.
“This opportunity will be beneficial particularly to those learners who go to schools that don’t have science labs in which to perform experiments, therefore having to base their science knowledge solely on theory.”
Science Discovery Week proves highly informative for learners considering a degree or diploma in Science.
Additional information on bursaries and how to apply to NMMU will also be shared.
The Science Discovery Week will take place at the Life Sciences Building (Building 127) on NMMU’s South Campus.
