The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape welcomes the decision by the Grahamstown High Court to dismiss ANC councillor in the Nelson Mandela Bay, Bongo Nombiba’s leave to appeal his criminal conviction and sentence.
Nombiba was convicted on charges of fraud and money laundering and sent to prison.
This after the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court sentenced him to 5 years direct imprisonment. Nombiba was found guilty after he stole R20 000 out of a discretionary fund that was allocated for a NGO.
In July he was released on bail pending the court decision on his to appeal.
It was reported by The Herald the decision to dismiss the appeal was taken on August 2 by Justice Chetty and acting Justice Huisamen.
According to the law Nombiba should have surrendered himself within seven days, but this did not happen.
We urge the authorities to act and arrest Nombiba as soon as possible.
The court’s decision yet again confirms that the ANC cannot be trusted with the people’s money and that criminalty exists with the ANC Caucus. The ANC is incapable of governing the City and South Africa.
Under the leadership of Mayor Athol Trollip and his team, the City has begun making progress towards a better future for all its residents through job creation and delivery of better services.
Since the DA-led coalition took over government in 2016 total change has come to NMB and a clean-up began to root out all forms of corruption and ensure a clean administration.
