Current thinking around Electric Vehicles is that they are a bit ‘naff’ – soft vehicles that cosset you in luxury, make sure that you stay in your lane, don’t fall asleep and have every luxury convenience available.
EV’s are viewed as certainly NOT capable of off-road performance nor carrying great loads.
BUT, for every misconception there is an example.
Bollinger Motors has created the world’s first all-electric sport utility truck. All electric. All wheel drive. All together different.
The Bollinger Truck (we in SA will call it a bakkie) includes a 100% electric drivetrain that delivers instant torque, silent operations, zero emissions, and a portable power supply for tools, machines, even off-the-grid cabins.
Sadly it appears that there are no plans for release in South Africa as the two versions – B1 and B2 – are being engineered to be compliant with regulations in US, Canada, EU, ECE, Australia and New Zealand.
Named for the founder, Tom Bollinger, one is tempted to say that this is a champagne of an idea!
Upon first viewing, the connection for Africa and the thousands of game drive vehicles we deploy was uppermost in my mind. A tough go anywhere vehicle that is silent and resilient is what all game park owners ask for – the street cred from being a contributor to our carbon neutral aspirations and silently wafting along to view animals is a pretty alluring combination.
Bollinger are installing a 120 kW battery pack with an estimated 200 mile (321 Kilometer) range – on our scale that equates to 2.67 kilometres per kWh. If you compare that expected consumption to vehicles already on the road you will see that it is pretty putrid. See: https://mynmb.co.za/ev-range-comparison/
