Currently being sailed out of the Algoa Bay Yacht Club and ending on 4 January is the 505 New Year Regatta.
Essentially this regatta is a test event ahead of the 60th sailing of the 505 World Championships taking place in Algoa Bay from 23 March to 3 April 2015.
Organisers are hoping to see One Hundred 505 two man dinghies on the water during March and April with close on 80% of the sailors expected from Europe, the Americas and Australasia.
Currently 8 boats are sailing a ‘Rabbit Start’ – the preferred start method for the 505’s – which involves a start boat (Pathfinder) sailing into the wind for 60 seconds with a guard boat to leeward, whilst the rest of the fleet start as close behind the pathfinder as possible. Strange to local sailors but if yesterday’s two practise races are any indicator then the starts during this year’s World Championships should be spectacular.
