The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality joins other spheres of government in celebrating Sanitation Month (May) and recognises the work that has been done. Part of the work that is currently under way is the improvement of Sanitation Infrastructure across the City. The Municipality currently has 3900 kilometres sewer lines, 86 sewage pump stations and 7 Waste-water Treatment Works in place. Hundreds of millions of rands have been pumped into the improvement of these systems. This has not only been necessitated by the City’s ageing infrastructure, it has also been necessitated by the increased population of the City due to a number of issues.
Despite all that work and hundreds of millions pumped in to improve the system and restore the dignity of the people of the City, this infrastructure is currently under siege due to man made damages.
This year’s Sanitation Month has been dedicated to awareness and the mobilisation of communities to work with the Municipality in protecting this Infrastructure. A number of awareness initiatives are currently under way, communicating valuable information to communities, including schools, clinics and government offices where people visit for different services. The political leadership is also interacting with residents through community meetings and radio stations.
As part of this drive, the municipality will tomorrow do a site visit in one of the areas that are frequently affected and currently experiencing sanitation problems. On this site the bulk 600mm sewer pipeline is vandalised on a weekly basis, affecting the Northern Areas and surrounding areas.
At the site the Mayoral Committee Member for infrastructure and Engineering, Councillor Masixole Zinto accompanied by senior management officials will inspect the work and extent of damage caused at the site. On site he will also brief the media about the extent of the problem (how much it costs the ratepayer), causes and the work currently under-way to overcome the situation.
