Just under 200 participants took advantage of the near perfect beach weather on Sunday morning to take part in the final open water swimming event of the season, the City Lodge Hotels Group 3 Beaches Challenge at Pollok Beach.
This unique event, managed by Zsports Events NPC, was open to individuals, teams of two, teams of 4, lifesaving Ironman participants and Stand-up Paddlers who all raced from Pollok Beach to Hobie Beach, to Humewood Beach, to Kings Beach and then ran back to Pollok Beach. Backed by the City Lodge Hotels Group since inception in 2012, the event saw 16 year old Jamie Riddle, from Stellenbosch, winning the individual swim category in a time of 55 minutes and 42 seconds from EP Triathlete Travis McGrath with early race leader 15 year old Slater Black placing 3rd. The ladies individual swim category being won by Liza Kingston from Lindi Terblanch with 14 year old Paige Black taking 3rd place. Marc-Kempton-Jones won the Individual SUP category whilst SA Lifesaver Daniel Jones from Summerstrand Surf Lifesaving Club took gold in the Lifesaving Ironman category.
Just under 50 teams took part in the event with the Blu Smooth Duo team of Kevin Richards and William Browne claiming the honours in a time of 58 minutes 42 seconds from Team 95’s Bradley Reen and Zac Thornton with Team 97’s Eben Haarhoff and Seth Charlwood claiming the bronze. In the quad team category it was ‘Les Chti Bretons’ team of Julian Biger, Fabien Le Thiec, Olivier Segard and Roselyne Segard who won in 1hr 11min whilst the duo team of Channae Erens and Alex Erens won the SUP team race in 55 minutes and 41 seconds.
